Steps to Perfection Basket
Basket weaving is one of the most difficult, time-consuming handicrafts. In Rwanda, this time-honored traditional art form is used for everything from wedding gifts to child naming ceremonies. In addition to being featured on the national currency, Gahaya Links baskets are a symbol of peace, each commemorating the Tutsi and Hutu women who come together to weave them.
This lovely smaller coiled and stitched lidded basket is created from naturally dyed sweet grasses, sisal, papyrus and bamboo. It is nearly perfect in form, but includes open and stepped patterning that rises from the bottom to the top of the basket. The design shows that life’s road, oftentimes the one to peace, is long, uncertain, but beautiful in its varied contours.
The Steps to Perfection Basket measures approximately 4.5” high with a 4” diameter.
