Nyae Nyae Necklace
This elegant Nyae Nyae necklace represents modern tribal beauty of the Nyae Nyae people, the original hunters and gathers of Namibia. It features seven separate strands of ostrich egg beads joined together in a triangle to clasp. The strands cascade around your neck for a stunning look and is designed to be worn with the Nyae Nyae bracelet as a set. Ostrich eggshell beads are a 40 000 year old tradition made by the original hunter gathers of southern Africa. The items are worn for cultural festivals but more often to support livelihoods of the crafters and their families.
Ostrich eggshell shards are sourced from commercial ostrich farms. Shards are first broken into small pieces. Each shard is then individually shaped into a round bead using a small piece of metal. A hole is drilled by hand as the artist twirls a stick with a needle at the end. The rough beads are threaded onto synthetic string and smoothed with a grinding stone or on a piece of leather. Your purchase is helping the Nyae Nyae to preserve their culture while earning a dignified income.
