Green and Blue Floral Suzani Bag
The word ‘lush’ comes to mind when looking at and touching this round green and blue floral Suzani bag from Bibi Hanum. In Persian, Suzani means ‘needle’ and alludes to centuries-old embroidery technique. Artisans first take fabric and then embellish it with silk embroidery to create traditional designs, including floral patterns. This bag includes green beads and a silk tassle and a triangular amulet that evoke tradition, the past and Middle Eastern spirituality.
Contrasting and complementary Ikat patterning on the reverse side of the bag add something visually unexpected. The bag zips, is lined with an inside pocket and is accentuated with leather edges and piping and braided handles.
Incorporating a 37-step process, Ikat is the Uzbek tradition of tie-dye in which the warp of a weaving is tie-dyed to create the intricate pattern. Once the fabric, a blend of cotton and silk is woven, the women of Bibi Hanum sew them into beautiful garments that are all finished with care by hand, adding to their exceptional quality. It is very difficult for weavers to align the various layers, which results in a blurred effect in the traditional patterning.
