The designs, colors and forms of these sculptures are inspired by the natural world found in South Africa. It is believed that transforming wire and beads into a sculpted animal gives the animal life and respect.
These animals are created using copper and telephone wire as well as varying glass beads to bring the designs to life. Using only pliers, wire cutters and scissors the wire is manipulated to create the animals form, beads are then added by a bead artisan to complete the work.
Many artists in the village grew up learning this technique from grandparents. Today it provides many mothers a way of generating income, and they are able to pass on the tradition to future generations.
Giraffe measures approximately 10 inches high, 4 inches long and 2.5 inch wide. This is an original handmade piece of folk art, so there might be slight variations in accent colors and materials than those pictured.
