Earth, Desert and Sky Urban Ikat Silk Tote
The traditional merges with the unexpected in this gorgeous and fashion-forward silk tote from Bibi Hanum. The triangular pieces in stripes and black on one side embellished with a white cross-stitch and leather accents and handles add a touch of contemporary cool to the bag. The reverse is full Ikat patterning while the inside brings additional surprises with a colorful striped lining and pockets. The bag has an easy snap closure as well.
Incorporating a 37-step process, Ikat is the Uzbek tradition of tie-dye in which the warp of a weaving is tie-dyed to create the intricate pattern. Once the fabric, a blend of cotton and silk is woven, the women of Bibi Hanum sew them into beautiful garments that are all finished with care by hand, adding to their exceptional quality. It is very difficult for weavers to align the various layers, which results in a blurred effect in the traditional patterning.
Each of these textiles is a one-of-a-kind handmade piece of folk art, so there may be slight variations from the item pictured.
