Ostrich Egg Shell Earrings
These Ostrich Egg Shell Earrings represents modern tribal beauty of the people of Namibia. The beads are woven in to a circle and then adorned with larger pieces of ostrich egg shell giving them a unique design. Ostrich eggshell beads are a 40 000 year old tradition made by the original hunter gathers of southern Africa. The items are worn for cultural festivals but more often to support livelihoods of the crafters and their families.
Ostrich eggshell shards are sourced from commercial ostrich farms. Shards are first broken into small pieces. Each shard is then individually shaped into a round bead using a small piece of metal. A hole is drilled by hand as the artist twirls a stick with a needle at the end. The rough beads are threaded onto synthetic string and smoothed with a grinding stone or on a piece of leather.
Circle measure 1 inch in diameter.
