'Apa Asyl' Felted Wool Kyrgyz Woman with Baby
The scene is typical of everyday rural life in Kyrgyzstan and depicts a child hugging his mother. The dolls are dressed in traditional Kyrgyz clothing.
These figures are handmade in Kyrgyzstan out of felt, a thick fabric produced by application of heat, water, and pressure for the meshing together of wool fibers. The women dye the felt pieces and then cut, and shape them into animals and dolls. Erkebu’s specialty is making the faces which are embellished with silk and wool embroidery and beads. She uses yarn hair to make the hair. .
