Yak Leather Purse
The handmade purse with zipper is made from yak leather by the Tibetan artists of Lhasa Villages. The soft and durable yak leather is acquired from a local tanning factory that collects the hides from Tibetan nomads. The artists begin by cutting the bag shape from the leather. This bag features traditional Tibetan motif, which is cut and appliqued to the bag using glue, followed by stitching. The bag pieces are joined by hand stitching. The bag closes with a decorative a zipper. The leather used for this purse is dyed turquoise inspired by the color of the Tibetan sky.
"My community inspires my art. In today's society, folk art is growing less valuable, and more items are being factory-produced. Our heritage must not be lost." - Thupten Chompel of Lhasa Villages, Nepal
