Black Mechak hand bag with brass button
The handmade Mechak hand bag with brass button is made from yak leather by the Tibetan artists of Lhasa Villages. The soft and durable yak leather is acquired from a local tanning factory that collects the hides from Tibetan nomads. The artists begin by cutting the bag shape from the leather. This bag features traditional Tibetan motif, which is cut and appliqued to the bag using glue, followed by stitching. The bag pieces are joined by hand stitching. The bag closes with a beautiful brass button cast in the Tibetan village of Namling. The leather used for the applique is dyed turquoise inspired by the color of the Tibetan sky.
This bag is available in black or brown.
Measures 4 inches high by 6 ½ inches wide.
"My community inspires my art. In today's society, folk art is growing less valuable, and more items are being factory-produced. Our heritage must not be lost." - Thupten Chompel of Lhasa Villages, Nepal
