Ostrich Egg Shell Sun Pendant Necklace
This elegant Sun Pendant Necklace represents modern tribal beauty of the people from Namibia. It features two separate strands of ostrich egg beads that join in the center to form a stunning sun shaped pendant. Ostrich eggshell beads are a 40 000 year old tradition made by the original hunter gathers of southern Africa. The items are worn for cultural festivals but more often to support livelihoods of the crafters and their families.
Ostrich eggshell shards are sourced from commercial ostrich farms. Shards are first broken into small pieces. Each shard is then individually shaped into a round bead using a small piece of metal. A hole is drilled by hand as the artist twirls a stick with a needle at the end. The rough beads are threaded onto synthetic string and smoothed with a grinding stone or on a piece of leather.
Necklace measure 23.5 inches from clasp to button and sun pendant is slightly over 2 inches in diameter.
